The Midnite Gamer

From my very first boardgame (Monopoly) many moons ago, to the rediscovery of the joys of boardgames thru the recent designer games, Jeffrey writes about his passion for all games with a board (or cards).

Union Pacific, Schotten Totten and more expansion maps

Essen 06 is over.. so what new games did I get? None!

Yup that's rite... no new games (yet). But I did manage to get some OOP games which I've been tracking, and also the new Power Grid maps (Benelux/Central Russia).

1. Union Pacific. Designed by Alan Moon before his famous Ticket to Ride series; this one caught my eyes because it seems to be a cross between Ticket To Ride routes and some share-trading mechanics from Acquire.

Was waiting for this game to be reprinted (it's rated quite highly in BGG at #55). Apparently Alan Moon is planning to release MKII of this game renamed as "Baltimore & Ohio" and therefore it's unlikely he'll have UP reprinted.

No idea yet how it plays but I'll provide a review/report after it's been played at our next Meetup @ Games Circle.

2. Schotten Toten. This game is from Knizia, and most people would not have heard of it. But they would have heard of Knizia's Battle Line. Schotten Totten is what you would call Battle Line ver 1.0.

It plays like Battle Line except it does not have the Tactic cards and the highest card value is 9 (instead of 10 in Battle Line).

I bought this game because i) I would like to add another fine Knizia game to my library, and ii) it has cuter graphics on the cards! Check out my earlier blog entry for samples of the cards.

3. Expansion Maps. Got the new Power Grid Maps (Benelux/Central Europe) maps which were launched in Essen two weeks back. If the two new maps play as well as their first expansion maps Power Grid Maps: France & Italy then they are good value!

For Age of Steam, I got four maps from Bezier Games - Pennsyvlania, North California, Disco Inferno and Soul Train. sigh.. I've yet to play my Scandinavia/Korea and France/Italy maps.

Sadly, it may seem the reprint dates for AOS may be pushed back indefinitely due to some dispute between Wallace and Bohrer.

Now, back to reading some of the rules.
