    Re: Leagues/Tournaments

    dear all,

**warning** sarcastic comments coming up... hehe:

PLEASE DO NOT OPEN A THREAD TO "DISCUSS" ANYMORE LEAGUES/TOURNAMENTS....

Over the last 3 years, there has been endless talk (yea, all talk!) of leagues, tournaments, and stuff by various parties including Puerto Rico, ASL, AOS, Formula De, and now NH... but NONE has materialized!

There has been NO organized play of anysort other than the annual Settlers qualifiers, Subbuteo league, Memoir + Carcassonne + Acquire tournaments (in GAMECON-1), which have all been organized by... the same person.

So, I'm pleading to those who run gaming forums, cafes, stores, etc --- stop talking endlessly about it and start doing something! PLEASE!

typical malaysians: all talk and no speak.
The one thing I find quite problematic with organizing tournament here is the following statement:
"you must get good prize and prize money first"

Why can't we just get the gaming enthusiasts to come together and just outright play for the title of best player/champion and produce a working system before approaching sponsors?

I came, I play, I lost, I return for revenge.

    Re: Organize gaming event

Why do we want to organize a gaming event :

    - Its a business thingy, I get something out of this
    - I love boardgaming so I want to share the love
    - I got nothing better to do

    Why we talk only :

    - What do we get out of this?
    - It way too big for one person to organize
    - Who is going to fork out da dough?
    - I'm just a follower, I follow
    - If I organize, nobody come how?
    - Its better someone other than me organize it

Add more if you feel like it.

NATO = No Action Talk Only

    LoStBoYz:

Why do we want to organize a gaming event :
    Why we talk only :

We dun have to agree with all that LB has listed but I think in many ways, some of the points apply to us when it comes to organizing a gaming event.

Beside those events listed by macedw, let us also not forget that other events - some annually also - have been organized around town. BGC did a M44 competition in TegFair (that's how our M44 black t-shirt came about), and Dave & gang have been doing Debackle, and DBA tourneys I think almost yearly. I think something is also brewing at WGS (if anyone can update).

So there *are* events around us just that becoz those events not what we want, we filtered them out.

On the other hand, there's no exclusivity on running events. It's not like Rio Grande prevent anyone of us from doing a Power Grid competition etc so for those who yak about no action, the floor is open for them to do some action. Why complain no action? Perhaps the truth lies closer to LostBoyz's post.

And for those who like to talk, well, I think they do have the right to yak yak and yak if that's what they want to do. There's nothing wrong against yakking, as long as we are not "forcing" anyone to do anything. Stick out tongue [:P]

    Re: Organize gaming event

Hear, hear.... DeBAKLe has been going on for 5 years already. Prizes in some years have been better than others but the numbers of participants have stayed fairly constant over the years.

We also had a short lived DBA campaign which was won by KJ by unanimous acclaim since everybody decided that they couldn't beat him in the last turn to prevent him from gaining the victory.

I remember there being Blood Bowl leagues and other Warhammer tournaments as well but as I'm not familiar with GW stuff, I'm not sure who organised those tourneys or what the prizes were.

    Re: Leagues/Tournaments

I love games leagues and tourneys played by enthusiastic players. The  posts above have mentioned tourneys/leagues by ppl in th games business. I feel that tourneys and leagues organised by  enthusiasts who are not in the games business should deserve a mention here:

    1. DeBAKL is organised by Dave in an annual basis. So far, it is in it's 5th year in 2007 (Correct me if i am wrong, Dave). IMHO, Dave is the best guy in KL, who is not involved in the gaming industry as a business, who has organised regular gaming tournament. Not only that but he has sponsored two prizes out of his own pocket. The entrty fees for these two tourneys barely cover the prizes so kindly offered by Dave.

    2. Blood Bowl League was organised by Aanemesis in Wolf's Games Shop around 2005/6 in his own time and from what I gathered was pretty successful too.

    3. Dark Age tourney by Shinobi and klplastermaster, who allowed players to use their Shinobi and klplastermasters fully painted figures in the tourney. These were held in Wolf's Games Shop.

I'm sure there are others who I do not know about. There are also some which I won't mention out of humility. What makes these leagues/tourneys organised by enthusiasts successful? IMHO there are 2 parts to organising a successful league/tourney by ppl not involved in the games business:

    1. Committed and enthusiatic organiser(s).
The organiser(s) must be dedicated enuff to spend time, sweat and sometimes, money to make it happen.

    2. Committed and enthusiatic players in the right numbers.
The players must be  dedicated too. It only takes one player who don't turn up as promised to spoil it for everyone involved. Also, the number of players must make it worthwhile. There is nothing more frustrating than having no-shows/latecomers.

From the examples above, criteria 1 and 2 were fulfilled in all cases.

Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something. ~ Plato

Getting the group enthusiasts to organise tournaments/competitions/events is a splendid idea.In fact I've a vision of an event to ignite curiosity from FHM (fun & happening moms) like myself to boardgaming thus influencing their hubbies and kids to play as well!Never underestimate the influential power of Supermoms. And why the perception of ASH gals who usually boardgame are those merely tagging along their men? It's time for us to brew the unexpected turnaround.Attract the ASH dainties who WILL get their ASH blokes to tag along!Wink [;)]

know any fhm's who would like to support the euro game retreat this weekend?

at the rate so-called gamers support local events - from tournaments to events - might as well not organize anything in future...

Re: What organize leagues/tournaments do you want to see?

Dude, don't be so sarcastic lah. When you organize events, we turn up in droves what? Did we ask anything in return? Did we ask for parking rebates?

As far as I'm concern, the retreat is for fellow hardcore boardgamers who has FREE time come together and play boardgames. This is NOT a newbie affair.

On a positive side, there are SO MANY organized meet-ups and impromptu meet-up nowdays, having and exclusive meet-up is not so attractive anymore, unless Genting is the secondary objective. I've been seeing so many new faces over the last 6 months at various venues, so I believe our "sacrifice" on the previous events are not in vain. WE DO HAVE NEWCOMERS.

Maybe, just maybe, you could organize special meet-up at these places for new product launching. That way you can introduce more people to these venues. Boardgaming at the moment is still spread by the word of mouth, so having launching at these venues is a much better idea than an exclusive retreat where people still have to fork out $$$.

I noticed you provide demo games to selected venues but very sporadic. So why not do a "bunch" launch and organize some tourney there? That way, you met your objectives, your dealers get to do business from it. If we're free during launch, we're more than happy help out. That way its a win-win situation: You get to reach out to more "new" customers and we get to play newly launch games and even buy some if we like them.

Re: What organize leagues/tournaments do you want to see?

    *rant on*

I think the original idea and purpose of the retreat was to get gaming groups that were playing separate from each other to play together, to get to know each other, to widen our gaming circle, so to speak.

As Lostboyz pointed out, this retreat does not serve the purpose to pull in new gamers (who'd want to spend money to do something that they have no idea about?)

The idea of a retreat is more of a socialising aspect rather than competition for hardcore gamers. Sure there are prizes to tempt those who might be thinking of throwing games, but last year there were mums and kids playing at the same table.

And can we stop treating events like its an expenditure rather than a chance for get together? To meet like minded people? To forge more ties? It's a chance really for gamers to bring their families along, let them join in a friendly table and worse come to worse, there's always the swimming pool and other activities.

So this is a chance, an opportunity. This is not an event to pull in new gamers. it's a chance for you to bring a spouse or family to get to know the friendly boardgamers. It's an opportunity for the singles to get to know future acquiantances who like the same activities. (although like wolfx pointed out, such ASH persons seem to be missing from the retreat).

So the work has been done, the opportunity has been given. But seems like the malaysian game market have not generate the critical mass to make such an event popular.

    *rant off*

Re: What organize leagues/tournaments do you want to see?

Unfortunately many gamers have lives outside the hobby (family, work *sigh*), but I know that overall, many gamers sarifice a LOT of time and money to participate and help out in events such as GAMECON, The Sci-Fi Convention at Cineleisure last year?, the recent AsiaGamesZone event, and also running demos and smaller tourneys at the shops and cafes.

Of course, more is better, but I see the local community here as being much more 'involved' that other places around the world.

Muchos Kudos to people like Edwin, Wolf, Jeff, Richard etc though, because much of the organising and initiation is done by them, but I reckon we also have a top-class community who are very willing and able to help out as much as they can.

Just my 2 cents. Big Smile [:D]

Re: What organize leagues/tournaments do you want to see?

errr, there are 2 aspects to "participation" here...

    1. gamers voluntering their time&effort to promote games to others. since gamecon-1, this has been excellent! mana ada complaint on this?

    2. gamers taking part in events like tournaments, etc. this is where my comments are directed... eg. free trip to germany also struggling to get minimum 8 pax per venue. gathering to meet other gamers where one can bring whole family along to do non-gaming stuff, struggling to get 16...

    sigh, sigh, sigh...

    2008...
    1. only sending triona to usa for finals. subject to raising sponsorship. this way, no need to organize qualifiers... and beg people to play...

    2. restricting carcassonne to junior competitor only from cempaka schools as they committed to have every class from every level (above 10years) from all their campuses (including international school) take part... so i don't have to beg "gamers" to play in qualifiers anymore ;-)

    3. retreat (aka essen releases) have to re-think altogether... mayb have to reward those that do come with free games...:-)
