    Msia Catan Championship 2006

Since many asked me when we are doing our own, here's some info I gleaned from da Man. We will be sending 2 reps to Essen 2006 as well and since there's one qualifier already coming from the Gamecon competition, there'll be one more place to fight over.

Edw says there'll be 2 more qualifying rounds tentatively in April and July. Stay tuned here.... you'll be the 1st to know once the qualifying dates have been confirmed.

And may you be the one representing us in Essen 2006. Cheers!

For those who are really really keen (read: desperate) to participate, send me an email at jack208@boardgamecafe.net and I'll personally drop you an invite mail when the qualifying rounds are announced. Smile [:)]

Re: Settlers of Catan Malaysia Qualifiers 2006

You can now win an all expenses paid trip to Essen, Germany, this October (19-22), to represent Malaysia in the International Settlers of Catan Finals!

Settlers of Catan, designed by Klaus Teuber in 1995, is the world’s most popular designer game, and multi award winner, where players win by becoming the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads, through trading and resource management. It has an amazing appeal to non-gamers and gamers alike, and has been extensively used by educators in classroom to teach:
    • Laws of probability.
    • Basic economic principles of demand & supply.
    • Resource management.
    • Negotiation & trading.

With 6 weeks to get familiar with this game, customers have more than enough time to get ready for the Starbucks Settlers Malaysian Qualifiers, which will be held as follows:

    • 8th July Starbucks Bangsar Village (1st Qualifiers: 2 seats).
    • 15th July Starbucks 1 Utama phase 1 (2nd Qualifiers: 2 seats).

Details for the qualifiers in the other locations shall be announced soon. Subscribe to this thread to be kept updated.

No, we mean Starbucks Damansara Perdana! Surprise [:O]

Now your brain is completely screwed, kekeke....... and you'll be unable to walk in for the competition <evil smirk>. Another one bites the dust......

Seriously, it'll be in the Old Wing of 1 Utama. Yes we did the launch of Starbucks Gaming Cafe at the New Wing but the competition will be held in the Old Wing. There is one Starbucks there. Smile [:)]

Re: Settlers of Catan Malaysia Qualifiers 2006 - DATES ANNOUNCED!!!

Oh yeah. I'm retarded... after much thinking (okay I also cheated by looking at the 1utama website) I realised that there IS a Starbucks in the old wing (as well as at the new wing). In fact, I must have walked near the outlet like a gazillion times before!

For those who are still wondering where the heck is the Starbucks at the old wing, it is on the ground floor, very near the Jusco supermarket - next to Delifrance I think.

OK, I'm off to practise feverishly for the qualifiers. I'm gonna win one of the 2 spots to represent Malaysia! I must! It's my life's goal!

Re: Settlers of Catan Malaysia Qualifiers 2006 - DATES ANNOUNCED!!!

I heard that a number of gamers were not allowed to enter the Qualifiers?

What are the reasons for this?

Is it because of limited positions? If this is the case then it should have been stated before the event, plus details about pre-booking places should have been announced if there was any.

Is it because of other reasons?????

Scott, I've absolutely no idea that this happened. I do not think there is any "barring of gamers. Perhaps there is some misunderstanding.

Each venue is allowed to decide on their format for eg Games Circle went for 16 pax modified-Swiss format meaning all 16 players will get to play 4 rounds each and total score wins.

Toybox is going for 32 pax knock-out ie. only the 1st/2nd from each game (of 4p) will go to the next round until we've a final table of 4. The 1st/2nd from this table are the qualifiers.

    Min participants is 8.

As for format like Games Circle, if they get more than 16 ppl what Richard planned to do is to have a one round play-off to decide the 16 to go into the Swiss round. So there's no limit to the registrations so to speak.

At the GC qualifer, I think there were one or two gamers who registered but from what I know, they were not present at the venue when Richard was making the draw at 2.45pm. Perhaps they came late and found the qualifiers had started. Well, can't be helped, can it? In any case, they can always join the other rounds. There are 5 more qualifiers to go.

If you are aware of incidents where Richard or anyone else bluntly rejected the registration, then do let us know - or post it here. That shouldn't have happened.

One staff from Settler's Cafe attended (and in fact he qualified!!) I've also posted a few times at the Wolf's forum asking trionaleo (she proclaimed herself Queen of Catan hahaha) to attend but have not actually got any response there.

Perhaps you can tell me more? Whisper [:-*]

Re: Settlers of Catan Malaysia Qualifiers 2006 - DATES ANNOUNCED!!!

I don't know the specifics, just that I'm hearing that certain gamers were turned away when they tried to enter.

I'm hoping that the reasons are not the ones that people are saying, because things have happened before, rumors and things have been said, accusations made regarding other events.

I'm not trying to point fingers, just trying to find out why, at these events, things like this apparently happen and ends up leaving accusations and comments with the gaming community.

But, like I said, I don't have all the details, hence the previous post, trying to find out why.......

Dunno if I have explained that well enough, but I hope you get the idea???

If you are aware of incidents where Richard or anyone else bluntly rejected the registration, then do let us know - or post it here. That shouldn't have happened.

I don't think this happened, in fact I would be very surprised if this was the case. But something has upset these people.

Re: Settlers of Catan Malaysia Qualifiers 2006 - DATES ANNOUNCED!!!

Yes I do get the idea mate. But rumours and accusations helped no one.

The best way is to air them out and hopefully get some clarifications. Otherwise hearsay can be a dangerous thing :P

So I do hope those gamers "affected" can come out and say a few words.

btw I'll be at Toybox this Sat for the 2nd Qualifers. If any of those gamers (who were supposedly turned away at GC) wishes to go, give me a call.

If they are indeed turned away, I would certainly want to find out why. But let us work on facts, and not hearsay if we are interested to find out the truth.

But one more point. Entrance to the qualifiers are by pre-registration and not adhoc walk-in. Registration closes 9pm on the eve of the qualifer. That is stated clearly in the invite sent out.

So if someone walks up to Toybox at 2pm this Sat w/o pre-registering and Nicholas (Toybox) refused to let him take part, he's merely playing by the book. This is not considered "refusing entry" to any gamer.
