Only 3 years but it felt like an era past. Last month we returned to Essen Spiel. This month we prepare to restart our signature event, the BGC Retreat! And what better way than to look back to the past (we are hosting it at the same place we did our last Retreat in 2019) to reach for the future (by introducing for the very first time, a BoardgameKids Retreat and an optional 3rd Day)! Get the deets here and see you (and your kids?) this Dec 10-12!
As the tumultuous 2020 came to a close, it’s time to put on a reflective hat and take a quick account of last year. It’s certainly not your usual year, but it’s also not all that bad. Here’s a round-up of Boardgamecafe.net in 2020. It was a challenging year but it was also one where we’ve many things to be grateful for.
Last year’s dial-back more relaxed unstructured Retreat was a resounding success, bringing together gamers from Malaysia and Singapore for a weekend of (almost) non-stop gaming. This year we rotate back to our (original) semi-competitive format as we get set to host our 9th Retreat this Dec 7-8 at the 3rd Rock from the Sun.
A change of venue and a slight change of format. This year, we’ll be hosting our 8th Retreat at Bagan Lalang, Sepang in a less structured, less competitive format. Still a blend of that latest Essen games and older/popular titles, and you now get to call out what games you wish to play! Mark your dates for this Dec 1 & 2 weekend for an awesome weekend of non-stop gaming. #nosharks #justmerman

Here’s the 2nd part of our Game Two report for the BGC Retreat 2013. You’ve read about Glass Road, Legacy, Bruges and Artifact in part one. Now find out how the gamers did for Byzantio, Lords of Waterdeep and Cafe Melange; and who went into Game Three in the lead.
The 2nd round featured no less than six (of the seven) games being a 2013 release – Glass Road, Legacy, Bruges, Artifact, Byzantio and Cafe Melange – and only Lords of Waterdeep was a 2012 game. So many new games…. so little time.
A replay of GAME ZERO & GAME ONE from our BGC Retreat event last year saw us revisit ORIGIN, MARS NEED MECHANICS, PELOPONNES, AFRICANA, BUCCANEER BONES, ZOOLORETTO DICE.. and MISSION: RED PLANET (?) at OTK Cheras last night.
It’s now time to get into the Retreat proper with the first scoring round in Game One where seven new/recent games were featured; ORIGIN, PACKET ROW, MARS NEED MECHANICS, PERGAMON, PELOPONNES, AMONG THE STARS and AFRICANA.
The 3rd iteration of our signature event, the BGC Boardgame Retreat, saw us hosting it at one of the greenest resort and with seven tables of 28 gamers, we were expecting to play thru 40 different games over two days, most of them Essen Spiel 2013 releases. Read on to find out what’s Game Zero.
