BGC Euro Saturday Meetup Recap
by jack208

There are a few publishers whose catalogue resonates very well with me, and Spielworxx is definitely one of them. So it’s no surprise that we’ve (almost) their entire lineup in our BGC Game Library. If you are another Spielworxx fan, you should be able to spot the few titles we are still missing. tsk tsk.

Pop quiz: Can you spot which games are still missing from our SPIELWORXX collection?

We’d already tabled one Spielworxx game – Squaring Circleville – in one of our recent Euro Saturday meetups. But they’ve so many interesting titles, that a dedicated SPIELWORXX DAY has to be set for one of our Saturdays. And with that in mind, we chose Spielworxx as the theme for last week’s Euro Saturday.

Note: Hosting a themed day such as this would have been a real challenge back when our Game Library was still kept in OTK Cheras (shop) while the meetup sessions were held in BGC Space which is a few blocks away. Every session meant hauling the games over to BGC Space for meetup days, and then moving them back to OTK Cheras for storage. However, when we finally bit the bullet and got the Great Migration done in April, with our entire game library now stored in BGC Space, it’s so much easier to host themed game days like this!

We kicked off the meetup with GENTES, THE COST, and GROUND FLOOR. These three are the more “known” titles in the Spielworxx collection. They are also from the early Spielworxx batch so would likely be a “new game” to our pax.

GENTES (Stefan Risthaus)

The first table featured GENTES, a Civ-theme game with a clever “time spent” action cost mechanic. This is the Stefan Risthaus follow-up design after the success of his ARKWRIGHT, also another Spielwroxx title.

We have both the OG Spielwroxx edition and the Deluxified TMG Kickstarter edition, and for today we tabled the TMG Deluxified version. There are no gameplay changes between the two versions but if you are someone who loves a beautiful board game, the Deluxified TMG Edition will absolutely wow you!

THE COST (Amanda Canales)

This is one erm… “controversial” game, but my take is simple: if you’ve yet to play this, you need to. If you love games with direct interaction, then you really need to play this.

When you want to maximize profits at all “cost”

This table’s play ended “early” with a total collapse of all the countries. LOL.

GROUND FLOOR (David Short)

This is technically not an OG Spielworxx title, with the 1st Edition being printed by TMG. Like die Macher, Spielworxx reprinted the 2nd Edition with new artwork by (regular) Harald Lieske. If you like economic game, worker placement, and engine building – this is one game to check out. With the full complement of 5 players, this can be a very cutthroat game.

3P is a good “learning” but 5p is where this game shines

Interestingly, a few ppl (BGG) mentioned they enjoyed the 1st Edition as well as the 2nd Edition. We do have both versions in the Library, but I’ve only played the 2nd Edition so I can’t comment on this. Perhaps one day, I’ll get around to do the 1st Edition.

Surprisingly all three tables ended at the same time. So for the 2nd round of games, I decided to reshuffled them into two tables; doing a 5p West of Africa on one table, and 4p London Necropolis Railway on the other.

WEST OF AFRICA (Martin Schlegel)

This game was published under the ADC Blackfire label so most would have missed it as a Spielworxx game. Technically it’s not. But as ADC Blackfire is a sister company to Spielworxx (Uli set it up for a different market), I usually lump all ADC Blackfire titles – and that includes Kraftwagen and Calimala – into my Spielworxx collection.

With a BGG rating of 9800+ most folks would have bypassed it, or never heard of it. But if you are one who likes player interaction in your game – messing up someone’s plan or getting yours messed up – this is one that’s right up your alley. Every turn forces angsty decision with your action cards.

This particular session ended in an epic fashion.. with two groups of players tying on VPs (tie breaker is the amount of gold the player held).

LONDON NECROPOLIS RAILWAY (Daniel Newman)

Kent – one of the instigators behind the economy collapse in The Cost game – joked that this game is the perfect follow-up to The Cost. After piling up those “bodies” from The Cost, this game deals with the aftermath of preparing the funeral arrangement for those poor departed workers.

A game with a very unique theme from Spielworxx, this deal with the unpleasant but necessary – and might I add, profitable – business of taking care of the dead. Building your train networks to transport the coffins to the cemeteries, and even arranging for “mourners” if necessary.

Kent: The first biz (game) feeds customers into the next biz (game)

That’s why I like Spielworxx games. They don’t follow mainstream trends, and will always offer some fresh design mechanics to the table. Not all of them hit it out of the park, but they are always enjoyable to play and discover. There’ll always be room for a new Spielworxx in my collection.

Here’s the Playlist for ES10. While we’ve covered 5 games today, there are so many more titles I can recommend – Dilluvia Project, Captains of the Gulf, Yinzi, Sands of Time, Yunnan, and the newer Pilgrim and Raising Chicago! Well, I suppose this means we might need SPIELWORXX DAY Part 2? tsk tsk

If these games are your jam, join us in our next Euro Saturday meetup.
