He who controls the Spice, controls the Galaxy….
Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel DUNE is I presume something all of us would have either read, or have earmarked it for future reading. (Oh, you haven’t heard of DUNE the novel? Click here then) In many ways, it is to sci-fi what Lord of the Rings is to the fantasy world.
Briefly, DUNE is the name of a desert planet not many would luv to visit except it is the only place where the spice melange can be harvested. “Spice” is the be-all and end-all in this world set 20,000 years in our future. If you have control of spices, you can literally buy or get whatever you want. As such… various factions are all eager to control DUNE (or to be more precise, the planet Arrakis).
SIX souls have been chosen from the OTK group of gamers and will re-enact the battle for control of Arrakis and it’s invaluable spice melange. The SIX will take on one of these roles; each with his/her/it’s own agenda.

Paul Atreides (Muad’dib) – rightful heir to the planet, gifted with valiant lieutenants and a strange partial awareness of the future, but beset by more powerful and treacherous opponents. |
![]() |
The decadent Baron Vladimir Harkonnen – master of treachery and cruel deeds. |
![]() |
His majesty the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV – keen and efficient, yet easily lulled into complacency by his own trappings of power. |
![]() |
Guild Steersman Edric (in league with smuggler bands) – monopolist of transport, yet addicted to ever increasing spice flows. |
![]() |
Fremen ecologist Liet-Kynes -commanding fierce hordes of natives, adept at life and travel on the planet, and dedicated to preventing any outside control while bringing about DUNE’s own natural regeneration. |

Gaius Helen Mohiam, Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood – ancient and inscrutable, carefully trained in psychological control and a genius at achieving her ends through the efforts of others. |
The SIX will struggle over a 42-territory map of DUNE… they’ll hold talks, they’ll wage battles, they’ll form alliance, and they’ll betray each other. Battles are won either by a courageous leader, or more often through an act of treachery.
Their objective? Just one… gain control of DUNE. Either by yourself or with a faction. Yes when it’s convenient, you become buddies. That’s how it works, right?
Observers to our DUNE game session are most welcomed. Stay tuned here for the date/time. However to keep with the theme of the game, we demand observers pay us “spices”! LOL
