Been awhile since I put in a sessrep. Hereβs a lengthy one on CLINIC, the Town Center designer Albanβs most recent game from last Essen. We also did SAMURAI SPIRIT, LA ISLA and PANTHALOS among other games seen in-play tonight at OTK.
If this is the first time you heard of our Boardgame Retreat or you have been contemplating attending one of our Retreats, you may have questions that we hope this FAQ would be able to help with
This year, our signature event the BGC Boardgame Retreat shall be a back to beach affair but with some strong games in this yearβs Essen Spiel releases we are looking at another awesome weekend of gaming, gaming and more gaming this Dec 6th. You do not want to miss this! π

ESSEN SPIEL 2014. Boardgamecafe.net’s 3rd iteration at the international boardgame convention saw us visiting familiar β yet new β grounds and meeting up with designers, gamers & friends; old & new. Hereβs a drive-thru of the first morning of our Spiel 2014 adventure.
Essen Spiel 2014 was a blast! It was my second year at the fair and that worked out well for me, as everything was familiar (most vendors were at their same location, halls were the same, etc.). Less awe, confusion and rushing around for stuff meant that I […]
Spiel 2014βs now done and dusted. While the Big Boys did not have as many new releases as weβd thought, as my buddy Kaz commented this gave the indie publishers β and they are growing not just in numbers but also influence β more opportunity to showcase their […]
Weβve not been doing theme nights for awhile at OTK so we thought of going back to themes for this Friday. And one theme weβve not done is FARMING. AGRICOLA likely comes to your mind first, however since most gamers would have been acquainted with that game, we thought of bringing out some lesser known βfarmβ theme games. Letβs walk thru OTKβs Farming Night and see why Ganja farms best for four. π
The 2nd part of Day Two showcased some interesting games which we are likely not going to see in Mβsia such as LβAEROPOSTALE, WOOLF, ROMANCE OF NINE EMPIRES, TRAINS & STATIONS and a walk thru promising publishers from EU notably ARTIPIA & PORTAL.
The first part of our Day Two report covered mostly games from indie publishers with some notable ones being Drei Hasen in der Abendsonne (we liked their booth deco!), Dobutsu Shogi, Japon Brand that gave us Machi Karo, Jolly Thinkers, an OTK fave Cafe Melange, and Mike Hutton’s 1862.
The afternoon of Day One saw us visiting the usual suspects of Days of Wonder, AbacusSpiele, Amigo Spiele, and Pearl Games. We also covered some of the high-buzz games of this Essen namely YUNNAN, MADEIRA, KEYFLOWER, RUSSIAN RAILROADS and BRUXELLES 1893. And there’s one physical football simulation game called KICKET!
ESSEN SPIEL 2013. Boardgamecafe.net’s back to Essen for this 4-day SPIEL and this report covered the morning session of Day One where we checked out games like Patchistory, Caverna, Origin, Expedition NorthWest Passage, Concept, Coal Baron before we paused for our lunch break.
Here’s the 2nd part of our Game Two report for the BGC Retreat 2013. You’ve read about Glass Road, Legacy, Bruges and Artifact in part one. Now find out how the gamers did for Byzantio, Lords of Waterdeep and Cafe Melange; and who went into Game Three in the lead.
The 2nd round featured no less than six (of the seven) games being a 2013 release – Glass Road, Legacy, Bruges, Artifact, Byzantio and Cafe Melange – and only Lords of Waterdeep was a 2012 game. So many new games…. so little time.
A replay of GAME ZERO & GAME ONE from our BGC Retreat event last year saw us revisit ORIGIN, MARS NEED MECHANICS, PELOPONNES, AFRICANA, BUCCANEER BONES, ZOOLORETTO DICE.. and MISSION: RED PLANET (?) at OTK Cheras last night.
It’s now time to get into the Retreat proper with the first scoring round in Game One where seven new/recent games were featured; ORIGIN, PACKET ROW, MARS NEED MECHANICS, PERGAMON, PELOPONNES, AMONG THE STARS and AFRICANA.
The 3rd iteration of our signature event, the BGC Boardgame Retreat, saw us hosting it at one of the greenest resort and with seven tables of 28 gamers, we were expecting to play thru 40 different games over two days, most of them Essen Spiel 2013 releases. Read on to find out what’s Game Zero.
